Phoenix

First we used goodbye microsoft to "repair" a laptop and guess what: it worked "out of the box". Some additional installation and a new laptop was born, called "phoenix". What else did we do:
- gregor startet my new Nokia N9 for the first time
- dvd watching works fine
- gpsbabel works again
- we had a fine dinner
- we tasted some beer
- the ofen spends us heat
well, a fine evening reaches it end.

goodbye Microsoft

welcome Linux

Almost foremost

foremost, rsnapshot, losetup, dd, gzip, dd if=/dev/sda of=sda.mbr bs=512 count=1, /proc/cpuinfo, /proc/meminfo, /proc/interrupts, ... and now we have a look at grub; booting just the kernel and the ramdisk. pffff.....
Btw.: Booting from USB-stick, when the Computer cannot is nice. Booting from a Digicam or the mobile is freaky!

It took 4 hours to give me back a graphic system! In the meanwhile I had just the konsole. But KDE 4.6 looks great! A real heavy looking.

cug-conf

the 14th CUG-conf is gone and it was very fine. First Philipp was caching while I was shopping. Then cooking started: pottage, roast pork out of an unglazed ceramic vessel and chinese cabbage. Followed by various presentations. pdf-tools, josm and lightning talks. Today some were tobogganing at the Simmering Alm. The final was setting up a PC for my mum: Debian 6.0 Squeeze with the Xfce desktop environment. Internet connection via yesss and a ZTE mobile stick, managed via wmppp. My culinary highlight was the cold roast pork from yesterday.
All in all a very fine event and I am looking forward the next at 8th July 2011.

Masters evening

Gregoa came to me and we startet a "masters evening". A lot of projects and a lot of hunger. We managed all projects, slept a lot and had fine eating. Now I can play DVDs, rip and play CDs, bender has a new video driver for the nvidia device and I can ssh from caliban to bender.
On saturday we had "Kaiserschnitzel mit Salbei-Rosmarin und Belugalinsen". On sunday we had "Schweinsmedaillons in Kräuterkruste und Speck-Belugalinsen mit Knoblauch". Very delicious!
It was a fine weekend wich crys for a follow-up.

bender could not start to live

Today, short after testing the memory, grub said:
"the symbol 'grub_printf_' not found"
"rescue mode"
"grub rescue>"
and bender stopped to boot.

My first thought was: "What did bender drink yesterday?" but after a short goo(r)geling I took all my courage and tried by myself what I found:
I rebooted with knoppix inserted and had a look at the kernelversion I use in /boot/grub/grub.conf --> 2.6.26-2-686. This old one because of the nvidia module.

Then a reboot into the grub rescue>.

Loading nessesary modules:
 insmod help
 insmod ext2
 insmod linux16
Tell grub where to find the image:
 set root=(hd0,1)
 linux16 /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.26-2-686 root=/dev/hda1 ro
 initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.26-2-686
Now do it!
 boot

And guess what: bender startet!

Thanks to Gregoa that he was not at home, so I had to search and do it by myself. I learned a lot about the boot mechanism.

Atoz is back again

Although it sounds strange that a timeless beeing is "back" again, here it works:
The WLAN "thing" of the Thompson Router doesn't work really good. So I reactivated my old WRT54GL linksys and configured it as an accesspoint with no DHCP, only WLAN-function. When a new device is attached to the linksys a.k.a. "Atoz" the DHCP request is sent through to the Thompson-device. Well, done!
